Swedish-made quality, innovative design, and customized solutions define the latest milestone for Hudiksvall-based industrial company HSP Gripen. The company has recently delivered its largest terminal bucket to date—a custom-engineered giant bucket for the Port of Sölvesborg, via OP System. With a capacity of 36 tonnes fully loaded, a volume of 18 cubic meters, and a weight of nearly 12 tonnes, this bucket is designed for large-scale heavy material handling.
The growing interest from European ports in specialized attachments is clearly visible at HSP Gripen. The company highlights that much of the demand is driven by customers’ appreciation for fully Swedish-manufactured products—from design to materials—which ensures quality, durability, and reliability. The company’s flexibility, especially in terms of custom solutions, is also seen as a key advantage.
Customized Engineering on a Record Scale
The project began following a customer inquiry in the autumn of 2023. Engineering work started in January 2024 and continued for six months in close collaboration with the client, followed by production, enabling delivery in June 2025. As machinery in the industry grows larger, tools and attachments must evolve in parallel. HSP Gripen’s capacity for innovation enables the company to take on projects of this magnitude.
The bucket is built to handle material with a density of up to 2 tonnes per cubic meter. The result is higher productivity, shorter turnaround times, and improved profitability for the end user.
Balance Between Standard and Custom Solutions
HSP Gripen offers an extensive standard range of grapples and buckets for the terminal segment. However, it is in custom projects that the company’s engineering expertise and innovative strength truly shine. Special projects demand precise cost calculations, material planning, and time estimates—factors the company considers essential for delivering tailor-made and sustainable solutions.
Project Manager and Design Engineer Pär Swedh commented on the construction:
“The design includes only three different hose lengths, which reduces the need for a wide range of spare parts. While smaller buckets in the terminal range typically feature two hydraulic cylinders, this one is equipped with four. One of the major challenges was to eliminate torsional movement in the yoke, which we solved with a box construction that absorbs both torsional and bending stresses.”
Material choices are strategically made to withstand high loads and wear. According to Production Manager Daniel Fors, only HARDOX and STRENX steel are used in the wear-prone areas of the structure. Additionally, the hydraulic cylinders are developed and manufactured in-house, giving HSP Gripen high flexibility and independence from standard components.
The delivery to the Port of Sölvesborg demonstrates that Swedish engineering, responsiveness, and strong customer focus can truly carry weight—both literally and in business impact.
