Intelligent control becomes central in modern truck-mounted cranes

Digitalization and increasing demands for energy efficiency are rapidly transforming the development of truck-mounted cranes. In recent years, HIAB has developed advanced control systems where electronics, hydraulics, and engine control are integrated into a common platform.

At the core of the system is the SPACEevo control platform, which acts as the “brain” of the crane and enables precise, adaptive control in real time. The system processes data from multiple sensors and optimizes movements, resulting in high precision and improved safety during lifting operations.

The new feature: Engine control directly linked to hydraulic demand

One of the most significant innovations is the Engine Control function, which connects the crane’s hydraulic demand with the truck’s engine management.

Instead of operating at a constant engine speed, power is dynamically adjusted according to load. This means that:

  • the engine delivers power only when needed
  • idling and over-revving are minimized
  • energy consumption is optimized in every movement

The system continuously adjusts engine speed based on hydraulic demand, eliminating inefficient operation.

Up to 40% lower fuel consumption

One of the most notable effects is reduced diesel consumption. In some applications, fuel usage can be reduced by up to 40% compared to traditional operation.

This is achieved through two key functions:

  • Automatic Start/Stop – the engine shuts off when the crane is not in use and starts automatically when needed
  • Dynamic RPM Control – engine speed is adjusted in real time for each movement

The result is both lower operating costs and reduced CO₂ emissions.

An important step toward electrification and decarbonization

HIAB positions the control system as part of the transition toward more sustainable machinery. By reducing energy demand in existing diesel systems, it becomes easier to meet stricter environmental requirements while maintaining productivity.

The technology also works with electrified solutions such as ePTO and hybrid operation, making the system relevant for future electric vehicle platforms.

Improved working environment and longer service life

In addition to energy efficiency, the control system provides several practical benefits:

  • Lower noise levels thanks to reduced engine speed
  • Less engine wear, extending service intervals
  • Improved working environment and easier communication on site
