H4U – Hydraulics in a New Digital Era

Bosch Rexroth introduces H4U (Hydraulics For You) – a groundbreaking platform that elevates hydraulic systems from hardware control to software-based modules that can be seamlessly integrated into existing automation environments.

What is H4U?

Traditionally, hydraulic functions are controlled via specialized hardware. With H4U, the expertise is transferred into software modules, making the system more flexible and independent of hardware configuration. Bosch Rexroth calls this “software-centring” and sees it as the next step for industrial hydraulics.

By using H4U, machine and system manufacturers can:

  • design hydraulic functions more flexibly

  • integrate them directly into PLC and automation systems

  • change hardware without having to rewrite functions

Benefits & Opportunities

Energy efficiency and sustainability
H4U makes it possible to optimize pressure and flow (p/Q) dynamically based on load and application. In multi-axis systems, such as hydraulic presses, Bosch Rexroth reports that up to 30% energy savings can be achieved through intelligent control.
This contributes to both lower operating costs and reduced CO₂ emissions.

Economic efficiency & lifecycle
Since functions reside in software, they can be updated, adapted, or transferred without replacing physical components. This leads to lower maintenance costs and higher flexibility when requirements change.

Independence & easier integration
H4U.app can be incorporated into existing control platforms without locking the customer into specific hardware. This reduces the need for training and adjustment when systems are changed. Bosch Rexroth Global
The modules also enable machine and process simulation in advance — for example, to estimate energy savings — which accelerates design and commissioning.

Software Modules (Apps)

Bosch Rexroth offers several modules within H4U:

  • H4U.app pQ
Controls pressure (p) or flow rate (Q) in hydraulic systems. Works with both fixed and variable displacement pumps, and can be integrated directly into PLC applications.

  • H4U.app xF
Controls position (x) or force (F) for hydraulic actuators. The module supports various system topologies for valve-controlled or displacement-controlled drive systems.

With H4U, Bosch Rexroth takes a major step toward the future of hydraulics – where flexibility, efficiency, and sustainability go hand in hand with increased technical freedom. For those looking to optimize machines, reduce energy consumption, and future-proof their systems, this is a solution to watch.
